Importance of a good location.

I would like to stress the importance of choosing a good (proper) location for your photo shoot. I am a natural light photographer. Other than fill light (flash on a sunny day), I use the sun to light my work. I shoot exclusively outdoors. Please make sure when choosing your location, that the spot is well lit, natural (no sub division houses, cars, etc... behind you) and safe. If in doubt, please come up to me in Newmarket (20 minutes from TO). I have spots that are not only appropriate, but preferred.

I shoot exclusively outdoors using natural light and allowing the environment to become a part of the portrait. Natural light, for me, is the most beautiful light. On days that are extremely windy or raining, I prefer to reschedule rather than suffer the elements. Think of Donald Trump's hair on a windy day. Point made?

Location Photo Shoots / Permits:

I enjoy visiting and shooting in new locations. A park I've never seen, a beautiful treed backyard, the waterfront. I do ask that clients be aware that most Toronto Parks and public locations require a permit. It is the clients responsibility to obtain the permit.

When choosing a location for your shoot, please keep this in mind. If finding a location is a difficulty, please feel free to come up to me in Newmarket. I have natural forests, a local park with Willow trees (my fav.), sun speckled trails, wide open fields, etc... all within a 5 - 10 minute drive. Having a good location is important to a great photo.

I photographed Janet and Dallas's wedding in 2010 at the very beautiful McMichael in Kleinburg. When I spoke with Janet a few months later, I learned that they had purchased two of my Groupons. Very cool. I'm looking forward to visiting their space and meeting the dog. :)

Faces of Courage 2011 Calendar Project:

Over the past year, I have been involved in a project lead by Julie Achtermeier, a survivor of breast cancer. Julie is a young mother of two, who was diagnosed shortly after giving birth to her son. With the help of a group of faithful volunteers, we have created a calendar to be sold to raise funds for radiation equipment at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre. Our calendar features a collection of beautiful black & white portraits of twelve brave women who have each battled her own very personal battle with breast cancer.

When Julie approached me and asked if I would undertake the photography of her project, I was honoured. For her to respect my work and allow me creative freedom was in itself a priceless affirmation. I asked myself, how best to present a portrait worthy of this subject, yet staying true to my creative vision. I felt very strongly that each woman should be photographed in a way which was first and foremost, a true portrait of her character and yet more specifically, an image which reflects her unique source of inner strength.

As I met with each woman privately, I asked her to speak of her personal battle. I listened to the stories of pain, the sense of loss, the loneliness. Stories of renewed spirituality. I witnessed in each woman a core strength, a sense of endurance, of life's purpose. These are women who have experienced a life changing event. These are our mothers, daughters, sisters, our girlfriends. These are courageous women who share a story. A story that I was fortunate enough to be a part of.

with her in particular because she gave me some straight

One funny thing that babies always do when I photograph them is to crawl toward me intent on fingering my lens.... maybe she sees herself in the reflection? I just love this little meatball head.

Displaying your portraits...

I recently visited a hotel in Toronto and couldn't but help stealing a quick photograph of a wall of photographic prints. You see, I am a great fan of the "grouping"... a wall of mixed up photographs from different events, usually in the front hall or up a staircase - depicting a collection of images of those special to us. What a way to decorate our home but with photos of those we love, in moments that make us smile? My clients are always asking of my opinion on how to show their portraits... and this example is the closest I can come to expressing how I would most like to see my work enjoyed...
